TelSoc News and Events

Dear TelSoc Member,

This year's Henry Sutton Orator is Geoff Huston, the originator of the Internet in Australia. Only thirty years ago, Geoff landed the first Internet packets in Australia and he has been involved in key moments in the Internet ever since, including roles with Telstra, the universities and AARNet. He is currently the Chief Scientist at the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre and the talk this year is entitled:

"The Rise and Fall of the Internet"

After thirty years the Internet is showing signs of strain. The engagement of computers with communications had been heralded with such promise, but it has turned sour. We’ve seen the Internet’s powers of disruption in retail, television and newspapers. Now it’s turning on itself with dark tales of election tampering, the destructive side of social media and an unhealthy preoccupation with cyber warfare. How did the Internet embark on such a self-destructive path?

Please join Geoff and TelSoc for what promises to be a provocative and illuminating oration.

The event is for Dinner and drinks at the Angliss Restaurant, 550 Lonsdale Street Melbourne, between 5:30 and 8:00pm on Thursday 20th June 2019.

Please register for this event on our website as we have only limited spaces.
